The Best Beaches Near Kona You Don’t Want To Miss

By: Nicole Rosania, travel content creator and writer at The Abroad Blog

Kona is the perfect vacation spot for travelers of all ages! From its numerous historic and cultural sites to scenic coastline drives to hidden beach coves, this area on the Big Island really does have it all. The Mango Sunset BnB is perfectly situated between the Kona International Airport and the charming downtown area, making it the perfect base for your adventure.

Aside from enjoying the many sunset cocktail spots in downtown Kona or the most magical snorkeling areas, I also recommend spending ample time at the beach during your time in Kona! Many of the best beaches on the Big Island are near Kona, so you should plan to visit a few. Here are some of the best beaches near Kona you don’t want to miss.

1. Maniniʻowali Beach (Kua Bay)

Maniniʻowali Beach, often known as Kua Bay, is consistently ranked among the best beaches near Kona thanks to its bright turquoise water and soft white sand. It’s a fantastic place for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying those classic Big Island views. On calm days, snorkelers can explore the rocky edges of the bay, but because there’s very little shade, be sure to bring sun protection.

Pro-tip: Arriving early usually means gentler surf and a quieter shoreline.

2. Kahaluʻu Beach Park

Just minutes from Kona town, Kahaluʻu Beach Park is a top choice for travelers looking for the best beaches near Kona for snorkeling. The protected bay offers shallow, calm water ideal for beginners, families, and anyone wanting a relaxed swimming experience. Colorful fish and green sea turtles frequent the reef, and amenities like restrooms and showers make the visit easy and comfortable.

3. Laʻaloa Beach (Magic Sands)

Laʻaloa Beach, also called Magic Sands, stands out among the best beaches near Kona for its lively surf and bright white sand. The beach gets its name from how the sand can disappear during strong waves, revealing lava rock. When the sand is present, it’s a fun spot for swimming and bodyboarding.

While I thought this beach was super accessible to get to, it was quite small and really crowded. However, its close proximity to town makes it ideal for a quick beach break or a sunset visit, though surf conditions can change rapidly.

4. Hāpuna Beach State Park

Hāpuna Beach will give you a classic Hawaiian beach day. I went here for a full afternoon and really enjoyed this beach! This wide, sweeping stretch of soft sand is great for swimming, lounging, or strolling along the coast. Calm summer waters, lifeguards, and family-friendly facilities make it perfect for a full day in the sun. If you’re looking for the quintessential white-sand beach experience, Hāpuna delivers.

Pro-tip: After your beach day, walk over to The Westin at Hapuna Beach for lunch or drinks by the pool! The restaurants here are open to the public and dining here at sunset was a lovely way to end our day.

5. Makalawena Beach

For those seeking a more secluded option among the best beaches near Kona, Makalawena is a beautiful reward for adventurers. Accessible via a rough road or a scenic hike, it remains quieter than most beaches in the area. Its powdery sand and crystal-clear water make it feel untouched and serene. With no facilities and fewer visitors, this beach offers a peaceful and remote alternative to Kona’s more accessible spots.

Since this spot is more remote and requires a 2 mile hike each way, I would pack lightly and also would not recommend this beach for families.

6. Anaehoʻomalu Bay (A-Bay)

Anaehoʻomalu Bay, or A-Bay, is another popular beach in the Kona area. The water here is usually calm, making it great for swimming, paddleboarding, or wading. Palm trees, historic fishponds, and stunning sunset views give the beach a relaxed, scenic atmosphere, while nearby dining and shopping make it incredibly convenient.

General Tips For Visiting Beaches Near Kona

When exploring beaches near Kona, make sure to pack reef-safe sunscreen, bring plenty of water, and check ocean conditions before heading out, as surf can shift quickly. Many beaches offer limited shade, so an umbrella, hat, or lightweight cover-up can help you stay comfortable. Mornings typically mean calmer water and better parking, and whenever you’re in the water, remember to avoid stepping on coral and give turtles and other wildlife plenty of space to help preserve Hawaii’s fragile marine environment.

Enjoy your Kona beach day!
