Best Snorkeling Spots Near Kona (And How To Get There)

Mango Sunset BnB is a serene retreat above Kailua-Kona. One of the best perks of staying here, aside from the coffee and the sweeping ocean views, is just how close you are to some of Hawaiʻi’s most dazzling snorkeling spots. Within a short drive, you can slip beneath the surface of the Pacific and discover coral gardens, tropical fish, and even see sea turtles gliding gracefully through the water.

Kahaluʻu Beach Park

A natural first stop is Kahaluʻu Beach Park, often called “Kona’s Snorkel Beach.” Its shallow, calm waters make it a favorite for beginners and families, yet even seasoned snorkelers love the abundance of marine life here. Here you can spot tons of reef fish, including parrotfish, colorful tangs, and even Hawaiian green sea turtles.

  • Getting There: From Mango Sunset, drive down to Aliʻi Drive (about 20–25 minutes). Parking is available near the beach park.

Hōnaunau Bay

If you’re craving something more adventurous, head south to Hōnaunau Bay, better known as “Two Step.” Just next to Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, this bay is renowned for its crystal waters and thriving reef system. The natural lava ledges create perfect entry points into the ocean, where schools of fish swirl around coral. If you’re lucky, you may even see pods of spinner dolphins cruising by.

  • Getting There: About a 40-minute drive south from Mango Sunset BnB. Head toward Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park; parking is available just outside the park. Entry is via natural lava “steps” into the ocean.

Kealakekua Bay

Another must-see is Kealakekua Bay, a Marine Life Conservation District and one of the crown jewels of Big Island snorkeling. This is where Captain Cook first set foot in Hawaiʻi, and today the monument marking that spot is framed by some of the island’s healthiest corals. Getting here is part of the adventure—you can paddle across by kayak (this is what we did!), join a guided boat tour from Keauhou, or hike the steep Kaʻawaloa Trail down to the shoreline. However you arrive, you’ll be greeted by shimmering water and a rainbow of reef fish. This drop-off reef actually inspired the reef in Finding Nemo! I recommend renting your own kayak from Ehu & Kai so you can hop on & off and explore at your leisure.

Kayaking in Kona, Hawaii
  • Getting There:

    • By kayak or guided tour: Several outfitters launch from the Bay — I recommend Ehu & Kai!

    • By hike: A steep 2-mile trail (Kaʻawaloa Trail) leads down to the bay.

    • From Mango Sunset, drive 35–40 minutes south to Napoʻopoʻo Road or the trailhead.

Kailua Pier

For something more relaxed and convenient, you don’t even need to leave Kona town. Right beside Kailua Pier lies Kamakahonu Beach, a calm little cove perfect for a quick dip between shopping and coffee stops. The waters here are sheltered and surprisingly lively, with schools of reef fish darting among the rocks. With King Kamehameha’s historic residence just steps away, it’s a place where culture and leisure blend seamlessly.

  • Getting There: 20 minutes from Mango Sunset BnB. Park near Kailua Pier and walk to the small beach next to the pier.

Snorkeling In Kona Tips

Wherever you go, the best time to snorkel is in the morning, when the sea is calm and visibility is crystal clear. Be sure to use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the fragile corals, and always give turtles, dolphins, and other marine life plenty of space to move freely. If you don’t have your own gear, rental shops in Kailua-Kona can easily set you up for a day on the water.

From Mango Sunset BnB, the underwater world of Kona is just minutes away. Whether you’re sliding into the shallows at Kahaluʻu, stepping off the lava rock into Hōnaunau’s blue depths, or paddling across Kealakekua’s bay, you’ll find yourself immersed in one of Hawaiʻi’s most unforgettable experiences when you snorkel!
